Constructing the Frame
The most common frame design is a 4x5 rectangle, requiring a minimum of 10 obsidian blocks to complete the perimeter. Players can automate part of this process by creating a "naked portal" in the world and then placing water buckets on the corners, which turns the flowing water into obsidian when it contacts the lava source. Once the frame is complete, activating it with a tool enchanted with Silk Touch preserves the obsidian, allowing for reuse and repair.
Utilizing the End Portal
Unlike Nether Portals, the End Portal is a pre-constructed structure found within Strongholds that serves as the gateway to the End dimension and the Ender Dragon boss fight. Accessing this portal requires finding a Stronghold using Eyes of Ender, which are crafted from Ender Pearls and Blaze Powder and thrown into the air to float toward the nearest stronghold.
Activation and Entry
To use the End Portal, all 12 portal frames must contain an Eye of Ender to turn the stone blocks into active portal blocks. Players cannot craft Eyes of Ender themselves; they must locate them within chests scattered throughout the Stronghold. Once the portal is active, simply walking into the green swirling texture transports the player directly to the End, where the final battle awaits.
Mechanics and Travel Logic
When a player enters a Nether Portal, the game calculates the destination coordinates based on the entry point, generally aiming for a location within 128 blocks horizontally in the target dimension. This means that traveling in the Nether covers large distances in the Overworld, making it a strategic tool for mapping distant biomes or crossing oceans quickly. However, portals must be built at least 128 blocks apart in the same dimension to prevent them from linking to the wrong location.
Safety and Precautions
Stepping into a portal without proper preparation can be dangerous, as the environment on the other side may be hostile or unprepared. Players should always carry building materials, weapons, and food when using Nether Portals, and ensure the landing area is clear of mobs. Additionally, rain can extinguish the flames used to activate portals, so having a backup flint and steel is a wise practice for any adventurer.
