Observing an end portal is often the culmination of a long journey through the blocky wilderness of a world. This structure serves as the definitive gateway to The End, a separate dimension housing the Ender Dragon. Understanding what a portal looks like, how it functions, and how to activate it is essential for any player seeking to complete the core narrative of the game.
The Frame: Structure and Dimensions
The most imposing aspect of the portal is its frame, which defines the portal room itself. Constructed from End Stone bricks, the frame forms a rectangular perimeter that is precisely 21 blocks wide and 21 blocks tall. Within this massive border, the interior clears out to create a hollow space, measuring 12 blocks wide by 12 blocks tall. The frame features distinctive notches at the corners and a unique pattern running along the inner edge, making it visually distinct from ordinary stone construction.
The Portal Matrix
Filling the empty space within the frame is the component that truly defines the destination: the portal matrix. This consists of 12 End Portal Frames arranged in a specific 3x3 grid pattern, leaving a central 3x3 area empty. Crucially, these frames must be oriented correctly; the small, flame-like icon on each block must face inward toward the center of the portal. When this configuration is complete and the required Eyes of Ender are inserted, the interface transforms into a swirling, star-filled vortex of purple particles.
Activation and Interaction
Simply building the frame is insufficient to open the gateway. The structure requires energy, which is provided by Eyes of Ender. Players must insert one Eye into each of the 12 End Portal Frames surrounding the empty matrix. As the final eye is placed, the portal activates instantly, emitting a deep purple glow and generating a particle effect that resembles falling stars. Stepping into this vortex transports the player to the obsidian platform found in the main island of The End, directly in front of the exit portal.
The Visual Experience
Physically entering the portal is an experience defined by sensory overload. The interior of the vortex is a mesmerizing tunnel of purple light and floating particles. The sound design reinforces this, replacing normal ambient noise with a deep, resonant hum and the ethereal chorus of the End soundtrack. Looking straight ahead reveals the destination—the obsidian exit portal, which mirrors the entrance frame but emits a bright, white light that signifies safety and progression.
Locating the Portal
Finding a stronghold containing the end portal is a primary objective for early-game exploration. Players must locate a Stronghold, a vast underground structure hidden deep beneath the earth. Within the library room of the stronghold, players can use Eyes of Ender to triangulate the exact coordinates of the portal room. This involves throwing the eye into the air and following the direction it floats, narrowing down the search until the distinct silhouette of the frame comes into view.
